“The Arc Toward Justice” | back to HOME PAGE |
Between Feb. 11th and Mar. 29th, 2004, the Massachusetts Senate and
House met in an extraordinary constitutional convention, called in response
to the Nov. 2003 Supreme Judicial Court
ruling that same-sex civil marriage is a constitutionally protected
right.
The goal of the convention was to override the SJC ruling, and deny same-sex couples have the same right to marry as heterosexual couples. If such an amendment were to become a part of the state constitution, the lives of gay families in the Commonwealth - thousands of men, women and children - would be irreparably harmed. Throughout the tense debate, some voices rose above the noise to defend liberty and equal rights for all citizens. This video presents some of the courageous Massachusetts senators and representatives who spoke out for equal rights. The arc of the
moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. |
